- made application for entry for a homestead on two different quarter sections - both the SW and NW quarter of 9-34-7 W4M. On September 28, 1909 he signed a declaration to abandon both of these quarters with the explanation that "The land is unfit for cultivation". Through these affidavits he was granted release from any obligations on these two quarter sections.
- built a sod house 12' X 29' and and moved in || Over the next three years they built a sod barn 13' X 34', dug a water well, plowed 40 acres and fenced 40 additional acres and by 1913 had a farm with 4 horses, 11 cattle and 3 pigs. In 1911, 12, 13 he put a crop in on 40, 23 and 14 acres.
