a farmer and a Mayor of Sofiewka, however his biggest challenge was as a member of parliament in Bucharest from 1919-22 after he was elected from the district of Ismal as a member of the Bessarabian farmers party. During this time period Romania introduced the much-hated expropriation laws where no farm was allowed to be larger than 100 hectares. The land taken by the government was then given to the poor. At the time Jakob had accumulated quite a bit of land which fell under this new law. He was a religious man and the Bible group met regularly at his house.

In 1845, his granddaughter Ida (Jans) and her husband, Fred Heller lived with William for about one year.

Occupation:
The birth certificate of his daughter Pauline in 1890 and his son Heinrich in 1894 show Wilhelm as a Settler (farmer) in the village of Neu Wittenberg (later known as Ober-Albota). His first five children are recorded in the Albota Lutheran Church Book, howerver the birth of neither Pauline nor Henry are in that book. The birth certificates of these last two children indicate that their birth information was held in the Baptist Church records, leading to believe that Willhelm & his family started going to the Baptist Church about 1890.

Immigration:
To date we have not found the date and place they entered North America however stories in the family say that they arrived in Montreal in 1901 and it would be logical that they would join his brother, Anton, who arrived in Irvine, Alberta in 1899. However, again stories in the family say that at Winnipeg they diverted south to check out the farms in North Dakota. We know that a Jakob Tetzlaff emigrated from Tarutino, Bessarabia to North Dakota in 1894 and although we have not found a link from the Tetzlaff family in Tarutino to our branch of that family, we cannot ignore the possibility that they went to North Dakota to be with the family of Wilhelm’s wife, Louise Tetzlaff. The family story goes on to say that in North Dakota family Ohlhausen met a family that had been there for some time and felt the land too rocky and poor to make a living so were planning to immigrating to Canada. We know that the Christian Gill family had been in Kulm, North Dakota from 1894 and moved to Canada in 1902 and took a homestead just south of the Ohlhausen homestead south of Irvine, North West Territories (later Alberta), Canada. It is possible that our family, along with the Gill family, immigrated in Apr 1902, when they both entered their homestead in southern Alberta at the same time.

Occupation:
obtained enter to his homestead at SE 28-10-3 W4||. As part of his obligation to earn the title to the land, the apllication shows that by 1906 he has built a 16' X 20' log cabin which became the home although in the beiginning they lived in a sod house. They also had other shelters for the animals. The application shows that he broke new land at a rate of about 20 acres per year and by 1906 grew 60 Acres of crop and had 21 cattle, six horses and 5 pigs. (prior to Oct 1905 this area belonges to the NWT)

The birth record of his son, Jakob at Sofiewka in 1895, indicates that Anton was a 'Romanian subject'. Therefore we assume that Bortscheak was under Romanian rule at the time of Anton's birth. Anton's birth certificate was destroyed in Canada by Mary Vossler, however her son kept the stamps which indicate that the certificate was prepared in 1899 in Russia just before he emigrated.

The Ohlhausen family grew up in Bortscheag, and was part of the German population of workers who had their own German school & church and mover to Unter-Albota in 1881.

The ship's manifest indicated that they were to join a cousin in Josephsburg, however the destination was shown as Dunmore (south of Medicine Hat). The manifest also indicates that they had $30 with them.

of the Lutheran faith, as indicated on the 1 June 1911 census for Irvine, AB which also shows that Anton came to Canada in 1899 and Amelia in 1891 and that they spoke German at home.

the map of Europe was redrawn and the province of West Prussia was given to Poland. Many people were forced to leave their homes and land.

Living:
where the children went to school and the Ohlhausen family and the Franz Jakob family bought an old farm to together. They did their shopping in Osterode and the bigger town in the area was Allenstein. After a couple of years they found that they could not make a living on this farm, so they decided to go to Canada.

Emigration:
with their family, along with the Franz Jakob family, first they took the train from Bissellen near Osterode to Hamburg and then through Netherlands to Calais in France and then from Hamburg. Here they boarded a ship named the 'SS Carmania' which sailed 7 Aug 1924 and arrived Quebec City, Aug 18 stopping at Liverpool England on the way.They took the train (6 days) to Trochu Alberta.

Immigration:
The family had been sponsored by Elisabeth Reister's sister, Barbara Scheunert, who paid there way to Canada and who lived in the Trochu, Alberta area. Mr Scheunert had also sponsored the Jakob family and one of their boys eventually married Sophie.

Otto said, "Aunt Barbara had arranged jobs for Mom, Dad and Sophia on farms in the area and Elizabeth & I lived with Aunt Barbara. Then Dad rented some land and a farmhouse from my uncle where we lived and farmed there until 1935."

Reuben confirmed that his father legally changed his last name to "Olhausen", because he lived very close to his cousin Henry H. Ohlhausen and their mail was continually being mixed up. Wayne Fuller's grandfather Henry H Ohlhausen told him that he added an "H" between his first and second names because there was another Henry Ohlhausen living very close and their mail was always mixed up. This explains why this branch of the family has the spelling 'Olhausen'.

A 1927 map shows John Ohlhausen's name on 3/4 of section 17.|| This farm was across the road from his brother Henry H, near Acme, Alberta and was purchased from John Keim. Later he bought the Ed Fischer farm 8 miles west of town. The boys went to Rodney school along with cousins. Elma remembered the boys coming to the house asking to see the new baby when Eddie was born in Dec 1927. They farmed with sulky plows, drills, cultivators and harrows. They raised cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys.

In March 1917 he took over his father's homestead farm || The first 4 years were rough as there was not enough rain to raise feed for their 6 cows and 7 horses. They even fed Russian thistle taken from the ditches and still two cows died. The years 1922-24 were better as there was more rain. They drove 25 miles to Medicine Hat every two weeks to sell butter and eggs and get groceries.

Occupation:
They worked hard but did not make much progress on this southern Alberta farm, so in 1925 when John Keim (Nathalia's step father's brother) offered them a 1/2 section of land with a house in the Acme district, they jumped at the opportunity. The Rodney School was close and Eddie was born in this house. A 1927 land map shows that he owned the NW17+SW20-30-27 W4.

Occupation:
They had 15 working horses and had as many as 9 horses pulling a 3 bottom plow. In 1932 they threshed 19,000 bushels of wheat and oats and after selling it did not have enough money to cover the expenses. The wheat was 27 cents a bushel. It was a good farm in the good times when there was no hail and they got the rain at the right time.

they moved to 1925 Mount View Cr. NW Calgary and on 31 May 1960 to 2033 Mount View Cr. where they lived until 1974 when they moved to Didsbury, Alberta. After all the years of farming and hard work they could finally just retire.

During his early years he was a cowboy and played a guitar and sang western songs. During that period he followed the rodeos and rode bulls. At the end of his career he worked for the city of Penticton, where there is an Ohlhausen Road named after him. Alfred was a charming and colourful person who enjoyed life to the fullest.

worked on family history and prepared charts from many documents and other sources. Vi was the first true Ohlhausen family historian in Canada. We know that they were in contact with the very famous Hermann von Olnhausen from Frankfurt Germany, who is known as the authority of the Ohlhausen/Olnhausen family tree. We have copies of letters from Hermann from 1986 to 1995, which contain a great deal of family genealogy. Judging from the amount of material, we can assume that this hobby consumed both Alf and Vi during the later part of Vi's life.
